I live in another country but wish to return to the UK, but I am afraid I may not be able to find work there. Would I be able to get help with any debts I might have on my return?
If you went bankrupt in the UK you would be able to write off debts incurred in any other EU country under something called ‘cross border cooperation’. Therefore, a debt incurred in Poland would be treated as if it were a UK debt.
You may list debts in countries outside the EU but those countries are not obliged to recognise the bankruptcy. However, if a debt from an outside country were to be included, the foreign company concerned would not be able to pursue you while you were living in the UK. This crops up a lot with US debt.
Bankruptcy UK offers bankruptcy help across the board and will submit your application online. Court appearances for bankruptcy are no longer required. Feel free to call us on 01425 600129 for a chat about your circumstances.
